What to do in mudgee

So, what should we do whilst in Mudgee?

Maybe you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a weekend and you’re trying to decide whether Mudgee is the place for you? Or maybe you’re dreaming of an adventure-filled road trip and a cosy spot to rest along the way?

Whatever your reason for visiting magical Mudgee, we are here to help you with a list of our top 5 things to do whilst you’re here:

  1. Wine

One simply does not visit Mudgee without knocking on a cellar door or two.

Although you’re bound to find a drop to your liking, the Mudgee region is best known for its red varieties - and that’s what you’ll find at most wineries in this region.

When it comes to choosing which ones to visit, bigger is not always best! One of our top picks is Short Sheep. This micro-winery is located to the north of Mudgee and features diminutive Babydoll Southdown sheep grazing among the vines. It’s all part of this particular vineyard’s commitment to sustainable practices.

If you’re after something with a little bit of rustic charm, you can’t go past Huntington Estate. Located in the central ranges, this estate is over 40 years old and boasts two designated nature reserves, created by the vineyard’s owners to encourage biodiversity.

It’s not always only about the wine- Mudgee has a way of weaving something special into each place you visit, leaving you spoilt for choice on just where to explore first! Read more on some of Mudgee’s leading wineries here.

2. Dine

Mudgee has garnered quite the name for itself as a foodie haven. And given that a good wine goes so well with a great meal, it’s no surprise that the region is now further revered for its world-class cuisine.

If you’re after a delicious breakfast, Alby and Esthers truly encapsulates the warmth of Mudgee- you’ll find yourself in a cosy courtyard setting and transported away from the stressors of the world. This place is tranquil.

And in the evening, why not treat yourself to a romantic dinner at the Zin House. The modern farmhouse restaurant takes in sweeping views of the certified organic & biodynamic Tinja property, nestled among classic Mudgee hillscapes and Lowe vineyards.

3. Shop

If a rural town isn’t synonymous with boutique shopping, we don’t know what is!

As well as Mudgee’s rise to fame as a foodie’s delight, the centre of town has seen a lot of new shops pop up. The main shopping strip can be found on Church Street and it has flourished in recent years.

In fact, boutique shopping is now one of the most popular things to do in Mudgee for some people, and it’s easy to spend a morning strolling through the stores.

While we have our picks, it’s worth a meander to see for yourself!

4. See

Whether it’s museums, art galleries or historic haunts that tickle your fancy, Mudgee has it all in spades.

Mudgee is the second-oldest settlement over the Blue Mountains, having been founded in 1821. Obviously a lot has changed since then but the centre of Mudgee has retained that 19th century colonial feel.

Strolling through the streets, you’ll get a sense of the town’s heritage and there are quite a few interesting historic buildings.

Outside of town, Hands On The Rock in Mudgee is a sacred and culturally significant site containing numerous Aboriginal rock art stencils belonging to the Wiradjuri people. Couple this experience with a hike of ‘The Drip’, located just 2km from the site and you have yourself the makings of a wonderful sightseeing adventure.

5. Explore

Of course, if wine-ing and dining isn’t exactly what you’re on the hunt for, why not trek some of Mudgee's beautiful nature walks. There’s certainly nothing quite like fresh country air and there are a few options available to the avid adventurer.

Head to Castle Rocks for a relatively easy stroll along a track to see the famous sandstone pagoda at Munghorn Gap.

Or, visit 'The Drip', located 50kms north of Mudgee, for a picnic lunch. Just don’t forget some appropriate shoes for this one. With rocky terrain and a creek crossing, it's an easy to moderate track taking you past sandstone cliffs housing gorgeous rock orchids, through to an area where the freshwater river cascades (or 'drips’) depending on the preceding rain.

Details of these walks and many others on offer can be found at the Visitor Info Centre.

While that’s our top 5, Mudgee is something different for everyone who visits
